GLI Upper

The GLI Summer Institute for students entering grades nine and ten offers greater immersion in real-life experiences and challenges. Participants will conduct a comprehensive self-assessment of their leadership strengths and challenges to create an action plan for leadership growth and goal execution. As they tackle outdoor ventures, case studies and team-building challenges, GLI students will deepen their understanding of ethical decision-making, negotiating difficult situations, building group cohesion, inspiring and motivating others, delivering and receiving feedback and having an impact on their communities. Together, they will apply the design thinking process to create innovative solutions to real-world problems, even as they embrace the value of productive struggle. Daily reflection with a personal mentor is a vital part of the learning experience.

At its core, GLI is a mentoring program, with facilitators mentoring counselors who then mentor participants. While this happens in all levels of GLI, the Upper OWL’s (Outstanding Wise Leaders) get an additional opportunity to connect with a GLI alumna who responds to reflections she writes throughout the program. In this partnership, both the mentor and OWL benefit from the shared reflection and new understandings that come from this relationship.

GLI Upper offers the opportunity for OWL’s to dig deeper into their strengths and values. They take a more comprehensive strengths assessment and with that deeper understanding of self, they consider how these strengths can be used to elevate their passions and personal values by crafting a personal mission statement. Consider how to engage others’ in the process, they then write and deliver elevator pitches and draft personal resumes. As their leadership impact shifts from just self and peers to greater community, these tools help these young leaders gather more support to amplify their impact.
